Somewhere in eastern Tennessee members of the Eden Ridge Baptiste Church are celebrating a new law in the state of Tennessee called the ‘Tennessee Sex Education Bill’.
Tennessee lawmakers added language to the state's abstinence-only sex education curriculum that warns against "gateway sexual activity."
The Huffington Post Reports.; Although Senate Bill 3310 does not specifically define what "gateway sexual activity" comprises, many have interpreted the phrase to include discouragement of anything that has potential to lead to sex -- including kissing, hand-holding and cuddling.
The bill is a response to recent controversies over sex-ed lessons in some Tennessee school districts that mentioned alternatives to sexual intercourse, according to The Tennessean.
A 2009 Youth Risk Behavior study found that 61 percent of Memphis City high school and 27 percent of middle school students have had sex -- higher than the national average, according to WMC-TV.
"'Abstinence' means from all of these activities, and we want to promote that," Republican state Sen. Jack Johnson, the bill's sponsor, told The Tennessean. "What we do want to communicate to the kids is that the best choice is abstinence."
Although the congregation celebrates, the victory is awkward and bittersweet. The Reverend Jenhediah Calhoun fought hard against any kind of ‘sexual deviance’ especially homosexuality. He is still a member of Eden Ridge Baptiste Church but is on a Church imposed ‘ministerial probation’ even though he ‘confessed his sin’ in a ‘round about’ way. That sin was of course, homosexuality.
A few years back, I visited some friends in Tennessee who had a ‘gay’ man living with them who was told to leave after some disagreements. The gay man, Benny left his mothers congregation to join Eden Ridge Baptiste Church which instantly inquired about his sexuality due to his casual but noticeable feminine qualities. After Benny confessed about his sexuality, many male church members, homophobic, asked the Pastor to have him leave or change his ways.
Well, Benny went into a deep depression over the resentment and became suicidal. The church stewardship led by Mother Abigail Wright told Rev. Calhoun to go see Benny and cast that ‘homosexual demon’ out of Benny and get him back in Church (Benny tried out for the Church choir and they found out he could sing like Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye combined).
So Rev. Calhoun and Mother Wright went to Benny’s and gave him a chance to be exorcised at the Church the following Sunday (they know they can pray the gay away).Benny was in his house wearing a tight t-shirt and shorts. Rev. Calhoun had him dress presentably in front of Mother Wright. Rev. Calhoun was sweating profusely when he and Mother Wright left. About an hour later, Benny realized Rev. Calhoun left his bible.
About then he heard a knock on the door, it was Rev. Calhoun and he came back for his bible. Calhoun, a middle aged, Irish, Italian and German mix treated Benny like he was a demon with a disease.
Benny, (getting ready for his night gig somewhere in a ‘club’ near Knoxville) was now wearing mascara, nylons, an orange red sun dress and a long straight wig when he opened the door for Rev. Calhoun. Rev Calhoun stood their dumbfounded while Benny tried to hand him his Bible.
As the Rev. stuttered condemning Benny to the pit, Benny noticed the Pastor had an erection.
Well, Benny put his hand on the ‘erection’ and Rev. Calhoun didn’t resist (no need to go into any more detail). That following Sunday a special meeting of the Eden Ridge Baptiste Church met to ‘exorcise’ the filthy ‘faggot demons’ from Benny, but Benny said he wanted to address the congregation, he did and read John 8:1-11.
Benny said ‘Let the man who has been with me slap me first’. The congregation gasped as he looked at Rev. Calhoun.
Needless to say they didn’t pray the gay away. Now there are a whole lot of issues regarding sex and teens, sex and society and sex in a ‘clean living village’. But beyond the sorry attempt to legislate the teaching of ‘abstinence’ by the state (Tennessee is among the top 10 states leading the nation in teen sex and teen pregnancy) STD’s plague the South.
The 2009 Tennessee Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates that among high school students:
Sexual Risk Behaviors
• 53% ever had sexual intercourse.
• 7% had sexual intercourse for the first time before 13 years.
• 17% had sexual intercourse with four or more persons during their life.
• 39% had sexual intercourse with at least one person during the 3 months before the survey.
• 41% did not use a condom during last sexual intercourse. (1)
• 78% did not use birth control pills or Depo-Provera before last sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy. (1)
• 16% were never taught in school about AIDS or HIV infection.
Alcohol and Other Drug Use
• 18% drank alcohol or used drugs before last sexual intercourse. (1)
• 2% used a needle to inject any illegal drug into their body one or more times during their life.
Now the other issue is that of ‘homophobia’. Not wanting to be around any kind of homo is quite natural for straight guys, because if it makes you want to vomit that’s normal. If you want to drive a stake through a homo’s heart or shoot them in fear that the “fag” disease will consume you – that's homophobia. A recent study was featured in the New York Daily News.
“Research, to be published this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, suggests that homophobes develop such anti-gay attitudes after repressing their own same-sex desires.”
"Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves," said Netta Weinstein, the study's lead author, according to Science Daily.
“Four experiments went into the study, each involving about 160 college students in the United States and Germany. Researchers measured students' implicit and explicit sexual orientations by their responses in a split-second timed task, in which they were shown words and pictures on a computer screen and asked to label each as ‘gay’ or "straight," and gauged their reactions.
They also answered questions about their upbringing and families, and filled out questionnaires to assess their homophobia.
In addition to showing that homophobic participants were attracted to members of the same sex, findings showed that homophobic attitudes were most common in those who had been raised by authoritarian parents.”

Given the number of clergy and politicians from the South who speak out against kids having sex, speak out against homosexuality and then pass moral judgment on people while legislating morality smacks of hypocrisy and has thinking people questioning their ‘Christianity’ or ‘right religious views’. You can’t teach abstinence, but you can teach STD disease prevention (except in Tennessee).
Or you can preach someone into hell while you ‘repent’ your own sexually deviant behavior. There are many Reverend Calhoun’s in Churches all over America willing to show you the way.
